LAMBING COURSES COMMENCE 4th FEBRUARY 2018

All the ewes have been scanned and delighted with the results which include three sets of triplets, one of which is from our Greyface Dartmoor Ewe Lara.  This will be the first time that any of our Dartmoors have had triplets.

Greyface Dartmoor with her twinsThe Lambing Courses start 4th February and the ewes lambing dates are for all of February which gives a good choice of dates to choose from.  We always try to fit in the courses to when ewes are due and give them some leeway either side of the date so that attendees will see a lambing during the time at Oakberrow.

The course also covers the feeding of the ewes and the after-care for lambs as well as the signs of when a ewe is going to lamb and actual lambing and problems with the different presentations of the lambs.

A good lunch is also provided!

If interested, please get in touch to book your spot.  Tel 01531 640102/07971675162 or dsg.oakberrow@gmail.com.

Lambing Live - last night was very busy

Ewes feeding in lambing barnOn the lambing list we had 14 on the list to lamb within a couple of days.  Obviously to a commercial farmer small numbers but for our set-up it means quite a lot of work.  This year the ewes who are in lamb to one of our new Ryeland Rams are all running about 4 to 5 days late to their lambing date, so you get all prepared for this and then the Grey face Dartmoors and Texels are lambing near enough on their lambing date.

Steve is glad to say that we are just over half way so he can catch up with his sleep after 6 of our girls lambed last night.

We have caught up with the lambing list which gives a slight breather.

The puppies will be leaving and going to their new homes over the weekend - apart from Bentley who is here while his new mum and dad are on holiday.

Lambing courses are going well and the girls will only  be lambing for the next couple of weeks so if interested please get in touch.  The people who have been on courses this year have been great and given great testimonials - 'Amanda - had a wonderful day, really enjoyed doing the practical things and learned lots - feel ready for my own lambing now!'.  'Jeanie - A really good day - a serious introduction to hands on sheep farming. Brilliant. Thank you.'

Lambing course dates for March 2015 at Oakberrow

In Lamb ewes ready for lambing at OakberrowThe ewes were all scanned last Friday and we are delighted with the outcome.  The Greyface Dartmoors we have 10 girls expecting and all the Texels are in lamb.  The Ryelands have also come up well with 34 of them expecting.  Plenty of twins and singles from the girls with one set of triplets expected.

The courses will commence from 17 February 2015.

NEW for this year we will have a few places for those who wish to experience night time lambing.  The course will start at 6pm and finish the following morning - what time you finish is with the ewes! A bed will be provided with breakfast and evening meal.

Day courses commence at 10am - 4pm which will include lunch.

We limit numbers on the courses - day courses maximum 4 people and for the night time maximum 2 people.

It is a great experience and previous pupils have found it really helpful and learnt a lot.  We do like you to have a hands-on experience, but of course this is all dependent on the ewes.

Please get in touch in you are interested, always pleased to have a chat through what you can expect to experience on the day.
